The serpent is one of the oldest and most widespread mythological symbols, being present in most cultures with similar meanings. The characteristics of the serpent which have stimulated in man its association with supernatural themes are numerous. For example, its venom is associated, like plants and mushrooms, with the power to heal, poison, or bestow an expanded consciousness (even the elixir of life or immortality). His skin shedding also makes him a symbol of renewal and rebirth which can lead to immortality.

Sometimes the serpent and the dragon have similar symbolic function, since the venom of the serpent has characteristics similar to those of the fire thrown by a dragon. For example, the ancient Greek Ladonian and the Norse Níðhöggr are sometimes described as serpents and sometimes as dragons. In China, the Indian snake nāga is often confused with the Chinese dragon ( lóng ). The serpent god Quetzalcoatl of the Aztecs and Toltecs also has dragon-like wings, like its equivalent in Mayan mythology ("feathered serpent").

In Egypt and Greece the serpent was associated with time and embodied life and health. Think also of the symbolism of the ouroboros which represents the cyclical nature of time.

In ancient Rome the snake had a completely original meaning linked to archaic aspects of the tradition which then went on to join the Hellenizing syncretisms. In the Latin language the word dracod raconis indicated a large crested snake with a beard that was often depicted as a decoration of the domestic lararium , or the place reserved, in the Roman house, for the cult of the Ancestors and the Lares. In reality, the snake in the Roman tradition did not have any negative meaning, on the contrary it was considered a benevolent protector of the house and its inhabitants. From an iconographic point of view, the dragon-serpent was also often used on the external walls of buildings as a disincentive to commit rude gestures in the surroundings, a warning to respect and not to soil the place (cf. M. Elisa Garcia Barraco, The serpent in the religious tradition Romana , Rome, 2019).

In numerous literary works the figure of the snake is present as a tempter. For example, the snake from the Little Prince, or Kaa from the Jungle Book.

In the Harry Potter saga the figure of the snake is present as a symbol of evil, associated mainly with Lord Voldemort and his servants (including the snake Nagini), but also with the protagonist Harry Potter to indicate his "dark side".

In The Neverending Story , the most famous novel by Michael Ende, the magical talisman called AURYIN, which accompanies the adventures of the protagonists Atreyu and Bastiano, consists of two snakes, one light and one dark, which biting their tails form an ellipse.
