Also known as the "Queen's Dog", the Welsh Corgi is a much loved and well known breed of dog

The Welsh Corgi ranks as a medium-sized dog, one of the most loved and well-known in the world. Its fame is due to the great passion that Queen Elizabeth II has for this cute four-legged friend (she owns three of them). The Welsh Corgi is originally from Wales , although there are some scholars who claim it was imported by the Vikings. In ancient times this purebred dog was known as a shepherd dog , which was in charge of guarding the pastures of the cows. Its function then changed, becoming an excellent companion dog , with a great spirit and good temperament.

What are the origins of the Welsh Corgi and its physical characteristics ? And what are the peculiar traits that distinguish the character of the "Queen's dog" ?

Welsh Corgi, origins and characteristics

As already anticipated, the Welsh Corgi was originally a dog that led the herd to pasture, and then it had a different appearance and size than what everyone knows today. The notoriety for these purebred dogs came with their introduction into the English royal chambers . It was in 1933 the Duke of York, who will later become King George VI, to buy a puppy of this breed, to give it as a gift to his daughter Elizabeth (the future Queen Elizabeth II). The young woman fell in love with him, and this love was the fortune of the Welsh Corgi breed , which has become, also because of its great sympathy, one of the most desired small apartment dogs.

There are two types of Welsh Corgi Welsh:

  • the Pembroke Corgi;
  • the Corgi Cardigan.

At the level of characteristics, the Welsh Corgi Pembroke represents the oldest variant , typically known in the red color of the coat. It is a fairly small dog: it reaches a height between 25 and 30 centimeters, and a weight ranging from 12 to 14 kilograms. The Pembroke Corgi has a fox head , short legs, uncut tail and short hair, which does not require special care. Despite being a working dog, it is good to avoid making this four-legged friend excessively tired , which is not always able to independently measure its energies.

The Welsh Corgi Cardigan was born later than the Pembroke and has smaller dimensions than its similar. This Corgi variant, however, was selected precisely as a companion dog , officially recognized as a separate breed by the Kennel Club in 1934. The physical characteristics of the Welsh Corgi Cardigan specimens are very similar to those of the Pembroke: fox face, short hair or of medium length, and all colors allowed except white.
