The plum blossom in Chinese culture (梅Méi)

An old Chinese tale tells that in the mountains, during the harsh winter, it was enough to decorate your home with a branch of plum blossom to find tranquility in the harshness of the colder season.

The plum flower in Chinese is called Méi: an ancient plant that is cultivated in many areas of China and which then spread to Japan and Korea. While in other Asian countries the plum is grown to harvest its fruit, in China its flowering has a more general cultural significance. Among the four most significant symbolic plants of Chinese culture, the plum blossom is the first. (梅Méi 兰Lán 竹Zhú 菊jú) The others are the Chinese Orchids, the Bamboos and the Chrysanthemum: four fundamental friends for the intellectuals of ancient China. In particular, the plum tree represented a good metaphor: a plant that blooms in solitude, before the other flowers, and can resist the harshest tests of winter.

The plum tree is the only type of flower that blooms under the snow. The ancient Chinese admired this characteristic of the plum because it can resist in the harsh environment and at the same time spreads its scent. Its flowers are very thin, without leaves, but have an incredible vitality. In China the plum tree is found both in religious temples and in private gardens. Its representation returns very often in painting and fabrics.

There are various types of plum plant, red Mei, wax Mei (yellow), white Mei etc. Since ancient times, the Chinese have liked to adorn their homes with a plum branch during the winter. The beauty of the plum is very delicate and manages to make the environment a poetic place.
